1549年7月27日，耶穌會傳教士聖方濟各．沙勿略抵達日本。
1945年8月6日，原子彈炸毁了廣島；3天後，即8月9日，另一顆原子彈炸毁了長崎。在原子彈由天上放下來之前，長崎是日本的天主教最為廣傳的地區。
1949 年8月15日，在長崎的聖母無原罪主教座堂，亦稱浦上天主堂 (Cathedral of Saint Mary of Urakami) 的廢墟中，舉行了一台主教大禮彌撒，並恭請了聖方濟各．沙勿略的右手聖髑重新抵達日本，以紀念聖人將基督信仰帶到日本400周年。
